We’re already into Day 3 of the Democratic National Convention here in Philadelphia. I can’t claim to be a delegate or attending formal DNC events, but I work in Center City, Philadelphia, in the middle of all the craziness. Whether I like it or not, I had to be prepared for this week. For other Philadelphians who are dealing with the same predicament, or for those visiting our lovely city, here are some tips in navigating the insanity that is the DNC.
- Plan for your trains/public transportation to be late. Even your Uber. For those who are traveling from/in the Metro area (or even within Northwest Philadelphia), you already know all about the #SEPTApocalypse situation. For those who don’t, we are having a lot of train issues, to say the least. Less cars are running on the trains, and lines are running much less frequently. Trains are packed and there are often delays, sometimes as long as 30-45 minutes later than scheduled. Buses and Ubers are subject to the street traffic, which can be a bit congested when protests are running up and down Broad Street and thousands are making their way to the Convention. If you’re going to rely on these modes of transportation, plan an earlier trip into Center City.
- Stay hydrated. Though the heat may have climaxed this weekend, it is still going strong. This heat is scorching. If you are marching in a demonstration or doing some historical sight-seeing, please remember to stay hydrated. Make sure to bring a water bottle with you wherever you go so you can (happily) survive this week.
- Avoid City Hall. This has been the gathering ground for many protesters, which is exciting and definitely interesting, but not necessarily somewhere you want to bring your kids at this time. I walked through the courtyard at City Hall during my lunch break two days ago and was pushed by a clumsy and zealous protestor, and I hit my head pretty hard on the ground. Not fun. Don’t go there.
- Buy some DNC souvenirs. This is a historical event. You came all the way out here for it. You need a way to hold on to the memories and prove to your friends that you were a part of one of the wildest, wackiest, and most divisive DNCs to date. There’s an official DNC pop-up shop at the Comcast Center with everything that you need. It will be open till Friday, August 5th. Go.
